The ACT Government is proposing to significantly expand the functions of the Board of Senior Secondary Studies in a bid to strengthen educational standards.
Education Minister Andrew Barr will today release a discussion paper on education and teaching standards.
The paper suggests expanding the functions of the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies which currently has responsibility for all year 12 qualifications and certificates.
An expanded Board could be given the role of monitoring academic standards from preschool to year 12 and maintaining curriculum frameworks as well as the registration of non-Government and home schooling.
The Government will be inviting the public to comment on the proposal.
Meanwhile class resumes for most public school students in the ACT today.
There are several changes to the educational structure with preschool being integrated into primary school.
Mr Barr says there will also be new pastoral and physical education programs.
