A new directory listing Victoria’s various multicultural organisations and service providers was launched today at the State Library of Victoria, providing more opportunity for diverse community groups to communicate, share knowledge and create new relationships.
The Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs James Merlino said the long-awaited directory would become a valuable community resource.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to strengthen multiculturalism in Victoria, reaffirming our reputation as a welcoming, inclusive and harmonious society and the 2008-09 Victorian Multicultural Resources Directory will benefit many people in providing important contact details for various groups across our diverse society,” Mr Merlino said.
“In Victoria, we have an amazing array of community organisations and services and this resource will be used by many of these groups to build networks, strengthen friendships and share knowledge.”
The easy-to-use directory lists the details for more than 1700 interfaith networks, language service providers, government agencies, chambers of commerce, consulates and community language schools.
The Multicultural Resources Directory is available at libraries, community and information centres and can also be accessed online at www.multicultural.vic.gov.au.
Mr Merlino said the directory would help people find the advice and support they needed, as well as encourage new connections between communities and groups.
“The important online component also means the directory can continue to evolve as new groups are formed in response to the changing needs of our diverse society,” he said.
Mr Merlino also thanked the many community groups that participated are included in the directory.
“The wonderful work of our diverse groups is an invaluable asset to Victoria and strengthens our community,” he said.
