Australia 'needs to improve education'

A new international education report shows Australia needs to lift its game when it comes to schooling, Education Minister Julia Gillard says.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) annual education report, released on Tuesday, compares the education systems of all 30 member countries and six partner nations.

$3 million for National Pilot to increase Cyber-Safety in Schools

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard and Minister for Youth, Kate Ellis today announced a $3 million national pilot project aimed at addressing cyber-bullying in Australian schools.

The Rudd Government is deeply concerned at the emergence of cyber-bullying in our schools and the impact it is having on students.

Computers and DVDs an increasing part of young Australians’ lives

A new report highlights the way that digital media is embedded in the lives of young children, commencing in pre-school years. In 2007, 94 per cent of 3 to 4 year olds watched television and 91 per cent watched DVDs or videos, while a sizeable proportion also used a computer at home (40 per cent) and a minority (16 per cent) had played games using an electronic games system.
