Gillard flags $500m to improve teacher quality

Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard says the Government is prepared to invest $500 million to the states and territories to improve and reward teacher quality and put better resources into disadvantaged schools.

Students lose if low-performing schools shielded

Students in low-performing schools have the most to gain from publicly reporting their results, with a report by the Centre for Independent Studies arguing this is one of a suite of reforms required to improve education.

In a paper released today, CIS research fellow Jennifer Buckingham says that arguments against so-called league tables protect schools at the expense of students and parents.

Teaching crisis looms

Public education in NSW is headed for a crisis as skyrocketing birth rates look set to clash with teacher retirement figures.

The "baby bonus generation", representing the biggest birth spike in more than 30 years, will enter the education system from 2011. At the same time, more than half of NSW's teachers will hit retirement age.

Educators and parent groups fear the system will not cope.

Child protection rules

Anyone who photographs children will need the permission of the parents before the pictures can be exhibited.

The ruling is included in sweeping guidelines released by the Australia Council yesterday designed to protect children in the aftermath of the Bill Henson controversy.
