At least six public high schools in NSW conduct "roll call" by scanning student fingerprints, but the Department of Education yesterday suspended the project at Ku-ring-gai High School as it investigates complaints that parents were not properly consulted.

Schools could do more to support child care and early childhood development, federal Education Minister Julie Bishop said yesterday.

The minister urged development of early childhood learning centres at schools.

She said that was frustrated by differences in state-based education systems.
